Black Men in White Coats Film Screening and Live Q&A Session with Film’s Creator

As we prepare to celebrate Black History Month, the Diversity and Inclusion Council at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland is pleased to offer free virtual film screenings of Black Men in White Coats to colleagues across Trinity Health Michigan. This documentary explores the systemic barriers that prevent black men from becoming medical doctors, and has received national attention on outlets such as The Today Show, Forbes, and NPR.

The film’s description states, “Fed up with the lack of diversity among doctors, a medical doctor sets out to explore why only 2% of American doctors are black men and what that means for society.”

We will offer virtual film screenings of Black Men in White Coats on demand from Feb. 1 – 5. For an admission code, please submit a request at www.surveymonkey.com/r/BMIWC.

On Friday, Feb. 5 at 1 p.m., we will also host a live virtual Q&A session with Dale Okorodudu, MD, the film’s creator. Dr. Okorodudu is passionate about increasing the number of black men in medical school, and will spend time discussing his experiences and answering colleagues’ questions.

We are honored to offer this experience to our colleagues, and encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity for learning and reflection.

Lori Marie Key, SMML RN, to Sing at National COVID-19 Memorial for Biden Inauguration Activities

A nationwide COVID-19 memorial is being held tomorrow to remember and honor the lives lost to COVID-19 on Tuesday, Jan. 19, the night before Inauguration Day. We are honored to share that Lori Marie Key, an RN at St. Mary Mercy Livonia, will sing as part of the ceremony. The memorial will feature a lighting around the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, and cities and towns are invited to illuminate buildings and ring church bells at 5:30 p.m. ET that day as part of a national moment of unity and remembrance. For more details and to watch, click here.

We Want to Thank You! 76% of Colleagues Vaccinated with First of Two Doses

A big thank you to all our colleagues who have eagerly sought to receive their COVID-19 vaccines. You have become some of the first across the country, even the world, to be vaccinated!

We are proud to report that as of Monday, January 18, 76% colleagues across Mercy Health and St. Joe’s have received at least their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

As our colleagues have been returning for their second dose, or full course of the COVID-19 vaccine, both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines will provide up to 95% protection from COVID19 within a week or so after the second dose.

Although we are challenged by limited supply, clinics are prioritizing vaccinating our returning colleagues to ensure maximum protection. Colleagues are advised to receive their second dose within 21 days for Pfizer and 28 days for Moderna of their first shot. If the second dose is delayed, it is still felt to be effective, but should be obtained as early as possible.

In the clinical trials, fewer patients complained of arm pain at the injection site with their second dose, but more people felt fatigue, had muscle achiness and chills with the second dose than with their first dose. Our own experience with Trinity Health Michigan colleagues who have received both doses is about the same. In all cases, symptoms have rapidly improved.

If you have not yet received your initial dose of COVID-19 vaccine, please be patient.

The COVID-19 vaccine, while not mandatory, is in high demand among our communities with very limited supply. We are working diligently with local health departments and the state of Michigan to roll out vaccines in a safe and equitable manner.

COVID-19 Vaccine Survey Results Now Available

Thank you for sharing your insight about the COVID-19 vaccine in our recent survey. More than 12,584 Trinity Health Michigan colleagues completed surveys. Highlights follow.

  • About 61.3 percent of colleagues said they would be likely or very likely to get the COVID-19 vaccine, based on what they know today.
  • Colleagues want to know most about the effectiveness and short and long-term effects that may come from the vaccine.

We are listening and appreciate your continued insight about the COVID-19 vaccine and our COVID-19 response. Important reminders about the vaccine:

  1. Trinity Health is fully confident in the COVID-19 vaccine’s safety and efficacy if approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
  2. The COVID-19 vaccine will not be mandated for colleagues as an employment requirement at this time. Colleagues will be encouraged to get the voluntary COVID-19 vaccine, following the phased prioritization guidance, as the best way to continue to protect themselves and end this pandemic.
  3. Safety is crucial. Please stay vigilant with avoiding crowds, physical distancing, mask wearing and hand hygiene, and continue upholding our personal safe living and decision-making responsibilities, as it will likely be mid-2021 before the vaccine is more broadly available.

We are committed to keeping our colleagues, physicians and community members informed with the latest information about the vaccine as it becomes available. This week, we launched a survey for our community members. We are committed to ensuring the people of our community receive the vaccine as the supplies are available to them, following the prioritization guidance.

Celebrate Safely This Holiday Season

The holiday season is approaching and due to the threat of COVID-19, it’s important that you stay safe if you choose to celebrate. Wear a mask, physical distance and wash your hands.

Whether you are hosting or attending a gathering, or planning to travel, here are some things you should be aware of:

  • COVID-19 case levels and spread in your community — High levels of spread in the gathering location, as well as where attendees are coming from, increases the risk of infection.
  • Celebration location — Outside is better than inside. Indoor gatherings generally pose more risk.
  • Celebration duration — Shorter gatherings are best. Events that last longer pose more risk.
  • Number of attendees — Gatherings with more people pose a higher risk than those with fewer.
  • Traveling attendees — Gatherings with attendees who live in the same area pose a lower risk
  • Personal behavior — Adhering to social distancing (staying at least 6 feet apart), mask wearing, hand washing, and other prevention behaviors lowers risk.

To learn more about how to protect yourself and those you love, the CDC offers holiday guidance to help you lower the risk of contracting and spreading the virus.

Colleague Appreciation Award to be Paid Nov. 19

As announced in October, Mercy Health and St. Joe’s colleagues will receive a $600 appreciation award in recognition of your extraordinary service to our communities.

  • The award will be paid on Thursday, Nov. 19 via the method you receive your regular paycheck.
  • It is subject to tax and other applicable withholdings.
    • 22-percent federal tax will be withheld. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has rules about what tax rate applies to certain types of payments processed through payroll. This type of one-time award is subject to a standard 22-percent federal tax withholding at the time of payment.
    • Retirement savings plan contributions will not be withheld from the award.
  • Please see the questions and answers file, which has new information: Read the updated Q&A

You and your talent, hard work and commitment to our Mission are appreciated.

Teams Virtual Meetings Available for Your Personal Holiday Gatherings

Your safety and well-being are extremely important to us, so Trinity Health is making it possible for all colleagues to host family holiday events using the Microsoft Teams virtual meeting platform, now through Jan. 4, 2021. We know it is difficult for families and friends not to be together this year in order to help keep one another, as well as our patients and communities, safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. We hope that being able to use Teams (or Cisco Webex if you have a host account) for your personal holiday gatherings and virtual visits makes it a little easier for you to connect with family and friends during this holiday season.

You may host a virtual family event using the Teams platform but please note that because of the volume of use, Trinity Heath is not able to provide technical support through the TIS Service Desk if you have questions or issues when using Teams (or Webex) for your personal use. Please also note that the recording feature is only to be used for business purposes and may not be used for personal gatherings.

To use Teams, please see the following guides to create and join a Teams meeting:

If you currently have a Webex host account, please follow your usual process for scheduling a meeting with your family and friends.

Thank you for making safety a top priority at Trinity Health. We hope you enjoy your virtual gatherings.

Please Note:

This technology is for the use of Trinity Health colleagues, their families and friends to connect during the COVID-19 emergency from Nov. 17, 2020 through Jan. 4, 2021. By using this technology for personal gatherings during this time period, you agree that your use is subject to all Trinity Health policies and procedures. Use for illegal or criminal activity and/or violation of Trinity Health policies and procedures is strictly prohibited. You are advised that if such illegal or criminal activity or violation of policy occurs, Trinity Health will take appropriate follow-up action, which may include disciplinary action or provision of evidence to law enforcement officials.

Employee Referral Program Now Standardized Across SJMHS

At Saint Joseph Mercy Health System, we are expanding our talented team of highly skilled professionals, and we believe it takes one to know one. We recently standardized our Employee Referral Program, which operated differently across various hospitals. Now, colleagues at all SJMHS hospitals can receive up to a $1,200 bonus for referring new employees to qualifying positions.

For each successful referral you make, you can earn a bonus with our Employee Referral Program. A list of positions that qualify for the bonus is available here: Colleague Referral Bonus Positions

Making a referral is easy!

  • Simply contact someone you know who you feel would be a strong addition to our professional staff and tell them about our excellent career opportunities.
  • Next, instruct your referral to add your name on their application as the referral source, as shown to the right.
  • Collect your cash bonus after your referral is hired and has met our guidelines.
  • All SJMHS colleagues, with the exception of HR, management positions, or colleagues that hold a clinical instructor position with an affiliation, are eligible to refer a candidate and become eligible for the Employee Referral Bonus.
  • Hired referrals must have a valid applicable Michigan license or National Registration/Certification, not currently work for a member organization of Trinity Health and must be full-time or part-time at time of payment of bonus.
  • The referring colleague must be employed at SJMHS at the time of the referral bonus disbursement.
  • Only one colleague may receive a referral bonus per new hire. The colleague identified as the referral source on the candidate application will be eligible for bonus.
  • The Human Resources Department has the authority to make final decisions on any matter concerning program rules, including bonus eligibility issues.
  • The Employee Referral Program is subject to change or cancellation at any time without prior notification.
  • This program is designed for external hires only and does not apply to internal transfers.
  • There is no limit to the number of candidates an employee may refer.

Please help us spread the word by posting this flyer in break areas.
